About the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief
With decades of turkey hunting experience under his belt, Gary Stover longed for a quality turkey hunting magazine that had been so common during his youth and young-adult life.
Taking an interest in outdoor writing and being coached by two experts in the outdoor writing industry, he decided to take on a challenge that others, for many years, had neglected to pursue...starting a well-rounded turkey hunting magazine.
Having no experience in magazine publishing (or the industry overall), he knew that the chance of success was next to nil. However, throwing caution to the wind, a decision was made to pursue his dream anyhow. There was a niche for like-minded, passionate individuals’ needs to be met regarding the turkey hunting “lifestyle and community.”
With massive hurdles yet to overcome, he finally realized his dream come to fruition with the first issue’s release in April 2022. With excellent feedback from the first, he is forging ahead to create a “successful” customer base, not merely stopping at a “satisfied” audience.
What to Expect
Turkey Hunter magazine is “well-rounded” because it includes stories/actual accounts, “Spotlight” pieces introducing interesting individuals with the turkey hunting community, interesting subjects to include turkey hunting history, collectibles, and independent product reviews. It showcases the many talented artists, artisans, call makers, and craftsmen within our boundaries, as well as high-definition photos to cement it all together
Value for Your Money
The magazine was started, in part, due to excessive amounts of advertising taking up pages that should be filled with contents and photos. Pursuing the 90-10 formula, the publisher’s point of view is that only 10% of the magazine should be dedicated to advertising content, not the industry standards of 25%-45%. More content is always more interesting.
